Lucerne façade from the ceramic manufactory

Lucerne, Switzerland – The façade at Kapellgasse 4 in Lucerne’s old town has been completed. Following a project competition and the selection of the winner, the planning phase for the residential and commercial building in a prominent location began. The jury opted for the design by Zurich architects Joos & Mathys Architekten AG. The winning project, named Nocturne, can now be viewed on Kappelplatz in Lucerne.

The facade

A bespoke cladding was created from over 28 different shapes and numerous color specifications in the context of the city’s coat of arms and development history. The façade columns, mullions, lintels and window sills are individually planned and handmade from stoneware ceramics. The large-format angled elements of the façade were a particular challenge. In addition to specially designed firing points, even the firing aids were conceived and manufactured specifically for the project. The ceramic material used for the building on Kappelplatz also has a special composition. Due to the highly transparent effect glaze, the basic shade had to be individually adapted. This resulted in lively, strongly handcrafted-looking cladding elements that run around the building floor by floor. These individual pieces left the Westerwald factory in numbers to be pre-fitted. The finished façade elements were then back-cast with concrete and sent from the fabricator to the construction site. The result is a high-quality ceramic façade that blends unpretentiously into its urban surroundings. With many different formats and few repetitions of the ceramics, these 600m2 once again make us a facade manufacturer.
